Amazing Video and Photo Collection of Disney Dream Christening Ceremony

Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Disney Dream, was christened this morning in a ceremony at Port Canaveral. Thousands of media, Disney cast members and VIP’s were on hand for the ceremonies.

The Navy Band Southeast kicked off the festivities with the National Anthem. Disney President and CEO Robert Iger welcomed the crowd, and Disney Parks Chairman Tom Staggs spoke about the new ship.

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson (of American Idol, Dreamgirls and Weight Watchers commercial fame) was the ship’s godmother. Hudson started her performing career as a singer on the Disney Wonder.

The Rev. Dr. Warren D. Langer Jr. blessed the Disney Dream ship. Before a helicopter carried a giant champagne bottle over its bow.

Christening ceremonies are a maritime tradition that dates back thousands of years, wishing good fortune and safety on new sailing vessels.

Dozens and dozens of Disney characters took the stage to christen the Dream. It was a ceremony only Disney could produce with musical numbers, pyrotechnics and fireworks.

Disney Dream Floats Out Ceremony

DISNEY DREAM CRUISE SHIP MAKES FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE IN SHIPYA
Disney Dream was floated out of Meyer Werft's covered building dock Saturday evening (October 30, 2010) at the Papenburg (Germany) yard. At 128,000 tons, it is the largest passenger ship ever built at Meyer Werft or at any yard in Germany. Disney Dream is scheduled to leave the yard for its precarious conveyance down the Ems River in two weeks for sea trials. Disney Dream will enter service on January 26, 2011.

The unusual evening float out (they are usually scheduled for just after dawn) was to accommodate some special Disney flair - a fireworks display over the ship lighting up the Papenburg sky.

Suminarsa, One of Indonesian Ryndam Crew Member Celebrates 35 Years of Service

Prior to joining Holland America Line, Suminarsa worked in the hotel industry. He served on his first HAL ship, the ss Rotterdam, as a General Purpose Attendant in 1975. He has been married since 1979 to his lovely wife Adesobariah and together they have two children, a daughter named Adriani and a son named Adriansah. Suminarsa is also the proud grandfather of three grandchildren. He enjoys spending time with his family and eating his wife’s cooking. When at home he enjoys ping pong, sports, jogging and listening to music or occasionally singing karaoke. His motto is “little by little, I will achieve my goals.”

Suminarsa’s advice to new hires is to understand that they are just as he was when he first started out, excited and full of anticipation. He advises the newbies to ask questions, learn the ropes from senior level crew members and follow the rules.
